On June 24th, 2023, officers in Los Angeles, California responded to a suspected robbery at a Lancaster grocery store. Upon arriving, they detained a man and a woman who were suspected of committing the robbery. There was then a woman named, #JacyHouseton, who began to film the arrest on her phone. While filming the arrest, she was then pepper sprayed and thrown to the ground by an officer.
When the incident initially happened, the identity of the officer who assaulted Housteon was not released yet to the public. The LAPD did respond to the incident when it happened, with the Sheriff of the county saying, “I want to make it clear to all of our community that this investigation is to objectively — and I do repeat objectively — determine if the force used was reasonable if it was necessary if it was appropriate and proportionate to the level of actions that were described”. It was reported by prosecutors that Houseton suffered from blunt force trauma to her head and injuries to her arms and wrist.
It was later reported that Los Angeles County Sheriff Deputy #Trevor

Kirk was the officer who used excessive force on Houseton. Fast forward to February of this year, and Kirk was convicted of one count of felony deprivation of rights under color of law. Following his conviction. Kirk was facing up to ten years in prison. However, his recommended sentencing by the prosecution was “if Kirk pleads guilty to misdemeanor deprivation of rights under color of law, the U.S. Attorney’s Office will “move to strike the jury’s finding” that he injured his victim, which made the crime a felony.”

The prosecutors who helped draft this plea agreement have not spoken to the press about the backlash and withdrew themselves from the case. Houseton’s lawyer calls it “a slap in the face of justice”.
