Last week, K. Michelle (@kmichellemusic) was doing an interview with the American Songwriter organization. In the interview, she was talking about her new music in the country genre, and the things she has done previous to the interview within the world of country music. The interviewer then makes a statement saying, “you didn’t grow up here, you didn't grow up with country music.

After that, K.Michelle then corrects her and lists her long history with country music. She states that she is from Memphis, Tennessee and has grown up around the genre her whole life. K.Michelle continues to say that she got a college scholarship for yodeling, and the genre itself was her first pursuit in music.
The interviewer then went on to say that she doesn't hear K.Michelle on contemporary country radio in general and she was met with a response saying, “Well, you don’t hear a lot of women on contemporary radio, period, right now. And you really don’t hear Black ones, but you will.”K.Michelle recently performed at the 2023 Country Music Awards, with artist Jelly Roll singing, ‘Love Can Build A Bridge’ and signed to BG Nashville.

“I was told I could not sing country music because I was Black, but it was something I had always been doing and will continue to do.”, she says as she expresses her roadblocks she has faced in her musical journey. She continues to say “I am so happy to be able to sing the songs of who I am and what it is I want to. So, I’m happy that people like you are just discovering me though.”
