On April 25th of this year, #MarieAngeBlase, an immigrant from Haiti, was found dead in a Miami, Florida ICE detention center. At the time when #ICE did announce her death, they stated that it was still under investigation. According to a detainee, Blase was complaining about Chest Pains, while shaking and screaming. She was reportedly given some pills and told to lie down with a blood pressure of 156.

ICE detained Blase after she tried to board a flight from the U.S. Virgin Islands to Charlotte, North Carolina without a valid immigrant visa. She was reportedly transported to two detention centers in San Juan, Puerto Rico, and Oakdale, Louisiana before ending up in Florida.  Many advocacy groups and politicians have spoken out, demanding to know more about the circumstances surrounding Blase’s death. The executive director of the Haitian Bridge Alliance has said, “Her death is a result of cruel inhumane policies and treatment of immigrants….We will continue to push for accountability on behalf of those who unfortunately find themselves detained, and trapped without proper care or due process. We demand full transparency on the death of Ms Blaise.”

Representative Sheila Cherfilus-McCormick, the only Haitian-American in Congress, also went to the House Floor and advocated for Blasse stating that she was not given proper medical care. According to NPR, ever since Trump has been in office, ICE stated that they have arrested 66,463 immigrants who don’t have legal status and have deported almost 80 percent of them.

When commenting initially on Blase’s death, ICE stated, “ICE remains committed to ensuring that all those in its custody reside in safe, secure, and humane environments. Comprehensive medical care is provided from the moment individuals arrive and throughout the entirety of their stay. All people in ICE custody receive medical, dental, and mental health screening and 24-hour emergency care at each detention facility. At no time during detention is a detained illegal alien denied emergent care.”
