Following Beyoncé’s groundbreaking 2025 Grammy win for Cowboy Carter, the Recording Academy announced a significant change to its country music categories. Beyoncé made history as the first Black artist to win Best Country Album, a moment that sparked both widespread celebration and debate.

In response, the Academy revealed that beginning in 2026, the Best Country Album category will be divided into two separate awards:
Best Traditional Country Album – honoring works that adhere to classic country instrumentation and styles, such as acoustic guitar, fiddle, steel guitar, and Western swing.
Best Contemporary Country Album – recognizing modern, genre-blending country music that reflects the evolving sound of today’s artists.

The Academy explained that this change was inspired by feedback from the country music community, which expressed a desire to better represent the genre’s diversity. Still, some observers believe the decision was also influenced by the genre-defying nature of Beyoncé’s album, which fused traditional country with elements of blues, opera, and hip-hop.
This isn’t the first time Beyoncé’s artistry has influenced the Grammys. Her ability to transcend genres continues to challenge industry norms and broaden the definition of what country and music more broadly can be.
