Georgia Has A Deadly Problem On Their Hands

On February 19th, 2025, #AdrianaSmith complained of having constant headaches, while being two months pregnant. She went to Northside Hospital and was given medicine but did not receive a CT scan. A few days later, her boyfriend woke up to her making gargling noise and gasping for air. She was then taken to the hospital and declared brain dead after blood clots were found in her brain.

After the hospital found out that she was over six weeks pregnant, which is the amount of time a woman has to get an abortion in #Georgia under the state’s Heartbeat Law, Smith’s mother told 11Alive, “They’re hoping to get the baby to at least 32 weeks….But every day that goes by, it’s more cost, more trauma, more questions.” The only exceptions to Georgia’s Heartbeat law are rape, incest, or if the mother’s life is in danger.

The first problem in this entire situation begins with Northside Hospital. The fact that Smith was a pregnant woman who kept complaining about constant headaches with no CT Scan is very questionable. One begins to wonder what would've happened if they caught the blood clots in her brain on time. It raises the persistent question as to why there is always a sense of alleged negligence when it comes to the maternal health of Black Women.

Furthermore, Georgia’s Heartbeat Law is not only heinous when it comes to giving women the proper time to decide if they want an abortion, but in Smith’s case, it is only adding more turmoil to the family, emotionally and financially. The baby itself has a high chance of being born blind, not having the ability to walk, or may not even survive long after birth. The family is also now financially responsible for every day that Smith is in the hospital.
It is very disheartening and dangerous that it is 2025 and women are still being put in danger because people in politics feel like they should have control over a woman's body and choice.
