Woman killed, suspected gunman found dead after shooting in Augusta medical district

AUGUSTA, Ga. — A tragic incident unfolded Tuesday afternoon in Augusta’s medical district, leaving a woman and an alleged gunman dead. The Richmond County Sheriff’s Office responded to a shooting at the intersection of Druid Park Avenue and Walton Way just after 1:30 p.m.

The woman, identified as 45-year-old #LashondaWilkerson, was found shot at least once and was pronounced dead at the scene. An hour later, deputies discovered the suspected gunman’s vehicle at Pendleton King Park. The man was found dead behind the wheel, with what appeared to be a self-inflicted gunshot wound.

Witnesses provided chilling details about the shooting. #CoreyGray, who was at a nearby Wendy’s, reported hearing eight or nine gunshots. He saw Wilkerson, who was driving a car, attempt to exit her vehicle before it crashed into another car approaching the intersection. Gray noted that Wilkerson fell about 3 to 5 feet from her car.

The gunman, driving a black Impala, reportedly circled the block and fired additional shots at Wilkerson. Despite efforts from Gray and others to help, Wilkerson was already dead when they reached her. Gray described Wilkerson as being in her early to late 30s and wearing dark-colored scrubs. He believed she had been shot in the chest.

The investigation is ongoing, and no further information has been released at this time. This tragic incident has left the community in shock, as they mourn the loss and await further details.
