Nyina Muigui Creates A New Healthy Cocktail Line In Atlanta

When Nyina Muigai, of Atlanta, started her sobriety journey two years ago, she quickly realized there was a gap in the beverage market — particularly, when she went out with friends, alcohol-free drink options were scarce.

That’s why the doctor and triathlete launched NoliQ, a Buckhead-based alcohol-free beverage line, in January 2024 to redefine the sobriety experience and advocate for a health-conscious lifestyle.

“I’ve witnessed the adverse effects (of alcohol) firsthand and I believe in promoting overall well-being,” Muigai said. “I’ve experienced the positive impact (sobriety) has had on my own life, including helping me define my purpose.”

After deciding to live an alcohol-free lifestyle, Muigai said socializing became difficult, especially since many social gatherings involve alcohol or being at places that serve it.

“It’s ingrained in our social norms that one must have a drink in hand during social gatherings — this may act as a conversation starter or simply serve as a symbol of togetherness,” she said.

Rather than accept this obstacle as a reality for the sober community, Muigai pursued a drink alternative that would rival its alcoholic counterpart. She turned to “spirit alternatives,” which mimic the taste of alcoholic spirits, bought a mobile bar and became a certified mixologist to cultivate the NoliQ drink line.
