Gastonia man in custody for shooting, killing girlfriend: Police

GASTONIA, N.C. — A man accused of fatally shooting his 19-year-old girlfriend and injuring her mother’s fiancé over the weekend in Gastonia has been apprehended, according to police reports on Monday afternoon.

The incident occurred on Saturday when the Gastonia Police Department responded to a domestic disturbance at a residence on Dix Street. The suspect, identified as #DavidMcDowell III, allegedly shot and killed his girlfriend, 19-year-old #ZanayahWhite.

On Monday, Zanayah’s mother, #ToyaWhite, revealed to Channel 9’s Ken Lemon that they had recently experienced issues with McDowell, who had become possessive over Zanayah. Toya recounted that McDowell attempted to take a phone from Zanayah and, when she refused, he shot her in front of her 14-year-old sister.

Toya shared her grief, stating, “He took my baby, he took my baby.” She also disclosed that Zanayah had severed ties with McDowell, who subsequently wrote a threatening rap song about her and posted it on YouTube.

Channel 9 reported a second shooting incident that occurred nearby around the same time as the Dix Street shooting. Toya confirmed that the victim of this shooting was her fiancé, Keith Tate. According to Toya, Tate had left his phone at the Dix Street residence and returned to find Zanayah dead. The suspect then allegedly shot Tate in the face.

Tate managed to flee the scene, drive away, and crash on Adams Avenue. Paramedics later found Tate and transported him to the hospital. As of Monday, Tate is reportedly recovering.

At approximately 3:30 p.m., police announced that McDowell had been taken into custody with the assistance of Kings Mountain police. He is facing a first-degree murder charge. While McDowell was at large, Toya expressed fear that he might return to harm her, stating, “He said he had a bullet for everybody that stayed in my house.”

Despite the allegations and charges against him, McDowell claimed his innocence in a social media post on Monday morning. The investigation into these tragic events is ongoing.
